Union General Info/History:
Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association was founded in Toledo, Ohio on January 25th, 1888.
It was decided that the 7 original locals that formed the Association would award Toledo with the local #1 since they were the host city, but the Toledo Officers declined and instead were first to draw the number 6 from a Darby hat.
Toledo remained Local 6 until it’s 100th anniversary in 1988 when it merged with 8 other districts to form the current Local 33.
Though Toledo is no longer local 6, it still strives to promote the Sheet Metal Industry and to educate and train its members to be the best journeyman a 5 year apprenticeship can offer. It is our goal, to not only carry on the traditions of our forefathers, but their excellence as well.
